DIY Daily Affirmation - Tutorial

We are currently remodeling/sprucing up our girls room and I wanted to make them an inspirational sign...sorta like a DAILY AFFIRMATION for them. Seriously, it is so hard being a little girl these days and I want my girls to grow up knowing that being "PERFECT" isn't what really matters. So, you can make your sign with what ever is meaningful to you.

Supplies

Canvas (flat, 3D, a scrap piece of wood,...what ever)

Paint

Paint brush

Vinyl Letters (or stickers)

Transfer Paper

Tape (painters or masking)

Paper Towel

Steps

Get Inspired and then cut out your inspiring words.

I used the Silhouette Cameo for my vinyl letters.

I found my original inspiration on Pintrest HERE.

Apply your transfer paper to your vinyl letters.

Make sure you use the grid on the transfer paper to help line up your words.

Add a 2" border around your canvas with the tape and apply your vinyl letters....and realize that white may not have been the best color choice for the vinyl.

My canvas was 16" x 20" but my vinyl sheet was only 12" wide. To avoid having to line up each line myself, I chose to add a 2" border.

Suddenly decide you're not in LOVE with the sign and call your girlfriend for advice....she affirms what you already know,... that the words don't sound right and the color's got to go....use a different color vinyl this time.

Choose a new paint color, wonder how old the paint is and hope there's enough left to paint the sign.

Paint, wait as long as you can for it to dry, peal off the vinyl and the tape and admire your work!

All done....I can't wait to see it in the girls room when it's finished.

I have a ton of projects I can do,...tons of material but nothing sounds good to me and the things I do make just aren't "doin' it" for me. I bought a ton of fabric during the after the holidays sales and then I bought some more that I didn't need, then I bought some more just because it was cute, but I don't have a project in mind for it....here's the new additions to my stash.

Minecraft beanbag-pillow for my oldest son.

I used my new Silhouette to cut out the flower and to cut out the heat transfer vinyl. I also used it today to make these new signs for my kids bathroom. I'm working on a Cat in the Hat theme...it's going slow...Someday I'll finish it and have wonderful pictures for you...until then you just get these:

I purchased the SNF Applause font from their online shop and used that...I LOVE the convenience of being able to download their images instantly.

I was amazed at how well the Silhouette cut such tiny detail....I know...I guess I don't realy have Crafter's Block...it's just that the ideas I do have, I'm not excited about...maybe I'm just in a funk. If you come up with any ideas on what to do with my new fabric, I'd love to heard them. Thanks for listening to me whine.

Fuschia and Fire Orange

I recently had a custom order from a lovely woman celebrating her 20 yr anniversary with a ceremony and reception. I must be honest,...at first I wasn't sure about the colors. But, when I got the paper home and started working on them, I fell in love! Now, I can't wait for my 20 yr. anniversary....so my colors can reflect the fire and passion my marriage still has after all those years...how sweet! Here are the flowers I made for her:

Break Free Linen Pillow

I've been busy. So many Christmas gifts to make...and I can't blog about most of them...we don't want to ruin the surprise. Once the holidays are over, I'll share all my little goodies with you.

Until then, I'll share my pillows with you. My ETSY shop is running low and I needed to stock up. So, I made a few of my ever popular Break Free Linen Pillows.

The pillows are appliqued on and sewn for added stability...the "break free" is done freehand. I also made this little number....She matches my chair I reupholstered earlier this year...and my curtains..I love this fabric. It's such a beautiful linen I've made myself a small change purse and a large slouchy tote....Can't get enough so I thought I'd share some with you....

I want to make some more items for my shop. It's so tough, this time of year, balancing projects for my shop and projects for Christmas.

I'm currently working on this Magnetic Scrabble board I found on Pintrest at The Twice Remembered Cottage What an AWESOME idea. She did such a great job and used almost 400 tiles!!! Hopefully I'll have mine finished and ready for a post tomorrow :)

Make Your Own Photo On Canvas - Tutorial

I was INSPIRED by The Sassy Pepper. Two Women, Sassy and Pepper, created some beautiful art using a blank canvas, some photos, paint and Mod Podge. They have a wonderful Tutorial and a few other projects using the same method.

Here's my version. Seeing how we're more of a silly kinda family, we did our own little Silly Photo Shoot Saturday morning. The kids wore whatever they had on that morning, bed-head and all. Here are a few from the photo shoot.

I'm not going to re-invent the wheel here. The Sassy Pepper did a great job with their tutorial. Here are the basic steps:

1. Paint a border on your canvas                        
2. Apply Mod Podge to the back of your photo
3. Place your photo on your canvas
4. Flip your canvas over, apply pressure while drying
5. Re-Paint your canvas border to blend your photo into the canvas and allow to dry
6. Apply  Mod Podge to your photo & canvas. and allow to dry

A few things I did different:

1. I created a large border around my photo rather than bringing it all the way to the edge of the canvas
2. I dabbed my final coat of Mod Podge with a dry paper towel to create a textured effect. As you can see in the pic below.

The photo on the left shows the texture.

LESSONS LEARNED:

• When applying the Mod Podge to the back of the photo you have to apply enough of it FAST enough that it won't dry by the time you go to put it on the canvas, but if you put on too much or your paper is too thin, it will warp your photo.
• Be very careful with your placement. It dries fast.
• When you flip your canvas over to apply pressure to the photo. You will want to place a book inside and then some weight on top of that so you don't get any bubbles. Don't forget to put pressure on the WOOD FRAME, as well as the inside, or you will have bubbles along your pictures edge.
• When dabbing with a paper towel to create your texture, be very careful. If you apply too much pressure or rub in one direction or the other, you can smear the ink off your photo.

Hope this helps! Here are my final photos. We absolutely LOVE them to pieces. I placed them on a small wall between our coat closet and our garage door. It makes me smile every time I walk by them!  Total project cost was less than $15. The canvas was $6 for 2 at Walmart. I already had the paint,  Mod Podge, and photo paper so I figured I used about $3 worth of other supplies I already had. Have fun with yours. I hope you've been INSPIRED just as I was.
